Modern Kitchen Renovation with 12’ Ceilings in Toronto
This kitchen renovation in Toronto transformed a dated space into a bold, modern design that fully utilizes the home’s impressive 12-foot ceilings.
By maximizing vertical space and introducing layered materials, the result is a dramatic and highly functional kitchen that stands out both visually and practically.
Maximizing Height & Custom Cabinetry Design
One of the biggest challenges in this kitchen was making full use of the 12’ ceiling height.
The original cabinetry fell short of the ceiling, leaving unused space and limiting storage. To solve this, a two-tier cabinetry system was designed and installed.
The lower upper cabinets, base cabinetry, pantry, and integrated fridge/freezer panels were finished in a medium matte grey acrylic, creating a clean and modern base.
Above, a second tier of upper cabinets was added to reach the full ceiling height. These were built using a gloss black wavy door material — the same finish used on the island — creating a cohesive and visually striking design.
The top cabinets were built slightly deeper, creating an overhang that allowed for hidden LED strip lighting between the two tiers, adding depth and a unique ambient glow.
Bold Material Contrast & High-End Finishes
This kitchen is defined by its strong contrast between matte and gloss finishes.
The matte grey cabinetry balances the reflective gloss black elements, while the textured surfaces add dimension and movement to the space.
The combination of finishes creates a sleek, modern aesthetic that feels both dramatic and refined.
Countertops & Statement Surfaces
The countertops were selected to stand out against the darker cabinetry and act as a focal point within the space.
Perimeter counters and the backsplash were completed in Caesarstone Coastal Grey quartz, offering a clean and cohesive look.
The island features Caesarstone Motivo quartz — a rare and highly textured slab known for its bold pattern and depth. This unique material elevates the entire kitchen and adds a standout design element.
Natural Light & Reflective Design
Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in an abundance of natural light, which interacts beautifully with the reflective gloss finishes.
The wavy black cabinetry and textured island surface capture and reflect light throughout the space, enhancing the overall depth and visual impact of the design.
Overall Design Vision
This renovation focuses on maximizing vertical space, embracing bold materials, and creating a modern kitchen that feels both luxurious and functional.
Through thoughtful design and material selection, the space now fully reflects its architectural potential while delivering a unique and elevated aesthetic.
A Unique Project Experience
This project came with its own set of challenges due to the building’s unique layout, including a step-down living area and a large crawlspace behind the kitchen.
To run wiring through the space, a mechanic’s creeper was used to navigate the crawlspace — a creative solution that highlights the problem-solving involved in bringing the design to life.
A Notable Building
This building is known for its unique units and has even been home to Deadmau5, adding to its character and appeal.
